Epilogue 1 << | Masterlist | >> Epilogue 3

Season: Winter
Scenario writer: Akira
Characters (in order of appearance): Madara, Kanata

Madara: Mayyybe that was a sort of a test. To make sure you had the power to overcome hardship yourself.

And at the same time, to make sure you had people willing to put their lives on the line to save you.

In the end, Souma and I made a move, and although it was a set-up by the enemy—we overcame it and won. We rescued you from the evil clutches of ABYSS.

I’m sure your mother felt a sense of relief, seeing that, thinking “Ahh, this child will be just fine.”

She probably figured letting you remain as you were would bring you much more happiness than taking you along with her to live the life of a fugitive where your future was uncertain.

Well, that’s just me talking though. Nothing we can do about it. I’m sure not everything went the way your mother would’ve liked either.

Your mother may have started it all, but our parents also got caught up in it.

Kanata: that must be it…considering how things “unraveled” afterwards.

Madara: Mhm. After the uproar, Souma-san and I rose to fame within the religion for rescuing you, who was almost kidnapped.

Thanks to that, I was able to continue as your caretaker despite the countless times I had messed up, and Souma-san was able to take charge of the rituals and the like.

Our parents also gained prestige and increased their influence within the religion. The leftovers of their children’ achievements.

Mm, no, I’m sure that was also a calculated part of their scheme, too.

After looking into it, I also found out the guys who kidnapped you at the time were my parents’ subordinates.

It’s no wonder they were so peculiarly trained and proficient in their movements.

They were genuine professionals trained to fight against human opponents.

During that kidnapping incident too, I bet they saw through our childish strategy and purposely pretended they got done in.

In that way, ABYSS was a fabricated villain made for us to defeat. A role made to be beaten.

And by creating this so-called “enemy” in the form ABYSS, the believers, shaken by the death of God, would come together as one…

Hmph, sounds like a familiar story, doesn’t it?

Even if that kidnapping incident didn’t happen, I bet they’d have the believers unite and come together as one as some sort of endgame for their plot.

Even the enemy of mankind, the devil, is God’s creation. When you think of it that way, it’s a very religious story for no particular reason.

Even if that’s the case, for the enemy of the Shinkai religion to be named ABYSS, which is just “Shinkai” in another language—it’s as if they were exposing their true nature!

It’s waaaay too sloppy. The believers who bought it are still believers.

Well, in any case, at the end of the day, our parents had us allllll in the palm of their hands.

And because various groups had the same motive, it made it possible to bring the hero-playing farce to life.

Kanata: Your mother and father—

Madara: Yep, and Souma-san’s father, too, had a hand in this.

Coincidentally, Souma-san found out about our predicament by overhearing his father’s conversation, and even found out where “The Abode of God” was located, despite it being hidden.

There’s no way he just so happened to come and save us in the best time, under such good circumstances.

I didn’t question it at the time, but in hindsight, I bet Souma-san was also led along by his father.

That kid was given the role of the hero that rescues us and proceeded without knowing that.

Kanata: still, souma could have pretended he didn’t hear anything and feigned “ignorance”.

despite that, he put his life in the face of “danger” in order to come and save us.

we had only met once and weren’t even friends.

that’s because he’s a “good-natured” person.

both now and back then, that child is a goood boy~♪

Madara: Ahh yeah, he did say something along the lines of “It is only natural for me to do this as a person” at the time.

There aren’t a lot of people that can put those words into action though.

He’s reaaally amazing… maybe it was the recklessness of a child or of ignorance, but even so.

From then on and even to this day, I’ve always held him in rather high regard.

The hero who came to save us.

Kanata: you should say that to the “person” himself. souma is very “honest,” so he’ll be delighted for sure.

Madara: No way. It’s frustrating too, in a way. I can’t believe the little baby chick that fainted when I hit him has become an even mightier hero than I—the hero I’ve always longed to be.

Kanata: oh, you. you’re the complete opposite of souma, not “honest” at all. you’ve always been like this, since long before.

Madara: Well after repeatedly experiencing failure and getting beat up by reality, I ended up becoming allllll sulky and twisted.

I can no longer be a kid who chases dreams.

Kanata: is that so. i still have “dreams” sometimes.

dreams of those days.

i wore an eye cover back then, so i couldn’t see very well, and the “dream” is essentially all dark, but—

—i definitely remember someone’s “voice,” their “touch”.

mother probably “held” me in her arms the entire time after i was kidnapped back then.

and having done something “mother-like” after so long, she began to cry.

drip, drop, it trickled down. a warm and salty something.

i do not know the meaning behind those “tears”. only mother knows.

was she happy to be able to hold her child after escaping? or was it from the loneliness of the inevitable goodbye that would soon come after?

i don’t know, but i will always remember it.

that warmth and the saltiness.

mother had the taste of the “sea”.
