Season: Winter
Scenario writer: Akira
Characters (in order of appearance): Kaoru, Kanata, Souma, Madara

Kaoru: That part of you is just like your mom, huh.

Kanata: ? have you met my mother, kaoru?

Kaoru: Oh no, we don’t know each other at all. I mean, there’s no way I could’ve had any connections to you guys in the past.

It felt like I could more or less could make out what kind of person your mother was, just by listening to the story. I’m sure she was probably just like you, Kanata-kun.

Kanata: well, we did grow up in the same “environment”.

people who were raised and lived not as humans, but as gods.

Kaoru: They probably couldn’t bear to watch that “pitiful person” any longer, and went out of their way to intervene. Just like how Souma-kun and Mikejima-kun went out of their way to try to support and save you, Kanata-kun.

That’s probably the truth behind this incident. Maybe you followed your mother’s footsteps without even realizing.

One thing led to another, and before I knew it, you, too, quit serving as “God,” see? Just like your mother.

Don’t you think your mother’s feelings then and the feelings you bear now are quite similar?

Personally, I think it’s better to just up and disappear without a trace—without leaving anything behind, without conveying anything. At least, from the point of view of those left behind. It’s hard to clean up the mess afterwards, too.

Even so, you guys wanted to leave something behind, right?

Why’s that?

Kanata: …ahh, i see, i get it now. thanks to you, kaoru, i think i finally understand the “feelings” my mother harbored at the time.

i love you all very, very much.

and i’m sure mother felt the same.

she actually wanted to stay with her loved ones, didn’t she?

that’s why she left something behind. even if it was just a little bit. even if they couldn’t get over it, even if it made them feel uneasy, she still wanted them to think of her, to remember her.

she left something behind because she wanted to stay in everyone’s “hearts”.

that’s all there is to it.

Souma: Shinkai-dono~! Mikejima-dono~! Oh and while I’m at it, Hakaze-dono!1

Kaoru: Wait, doesn’t it look like I’m the only one that’s not treated very nicely?

Kanata: fufu. on the contrary, it feels like you’re getting “special treatment” from souma, so i’m jealous.

Kaoru: Huh, so you get jealous of me too. I might be a little happy about that.

Souma: What are you talking about? More importantly, look! The sky is crying.

In other words, it’s raining! Should we not take refuge in the clubroom before we end up getting soaked?

Kanata: i am already “soaked” though~?

Souma: It is as you say… You’ll end up catching another cold again, Shinkai-dono. You worry me. You must wipe your body and keep warm.

For that, too, we must take shelter from the rain. And while I’m at it, I’d be thankful if I could have everyone lend a hand in cleaning up the clubroom.

Madara: Sure. It is more efficient to have more hands on deck than to do it alone, after all!

I’ll help you out. Then we can call it even for helping me save Kanata-san in the past.

Souma: That's very like you to say, Mikejima-dono, but isn’t this rather disproportionate to the favor I did for you back then?

Madara: …Hahaha ♪

Kanata: ? what’s so funny, mikejima?

Madara: No, it’s merely a coincidence, and there’s no such thing as God or spirits in this world but…

It’s as if your mother’s being considerate, making it rain after seeing you all alone, as if urging you to join the others.

I know such a thing isn’t possible, but still, thinking about it made me laugh.

Kanata: fufu. yes, you’re right. mother is no longer “god,” so she can no longer make it “rain”.

but…yes, it would be nice if that were the case.

Kanata: —thank you, mother.

as you can see, i’m living a reasonably happy life.

so please don’t cry anymore, okay?

Characters (in order of appearance): Madara, Kanata, Kaoru

Madara: Well, at any rate, good for you, Kanata-san. It’s not like I’m bragging or anything but I don’t have a single good memory with my mother.

Kanata: try to get along, okay…because your “mother” is still “alive,” mikejima.

Madara: Hahaha. You know, maybe it’s better your mother left.

Mothers and stuff get sooo annoying once you hit puberty, you know?? I’m sure you would’ve fought with yours if she was still alive and by your side.

Kanata:
yes. perhaps. but i wanted to have those “fights,” too.

just like an ordinary “mother and son,” like “family” would do.

that’s my only “regret”—i couldn’t get over it, and so i always held onto “this”—

the last remaining “connection” i have to mother.

Madara: Ahh, that urn, huh. That thing’s been empty from the very start, right?

Kanata: yes. mother only faked her “death,” so there was no body left behind from the very start. and naturally, no “ashes” or “remains” either.

it was because of that—because there was nothing in this “urn,” I knew my mother was still alive.

this “urn” was a “message” to convey that. there is no deeper meaning behind it.

Madara: Even though she was the one who disappeared of her own will, she still wanted you to know that she was still alive, huh.

Kanata: yes. “mother” is alive. and she is watching over me from far away—

Madara: She might’ve just forced a buuunch of unnecessary things on us, though. Like the position of God and stuff. Maybe the empty urn was meant to send a message with that type of meaning.

Kanata: my mother is different from yours, so she wouldn’t do such a “mean” thing, you know~?

Kaoru: Heeey, Kanata-kuuun!

Kanata: kaoru.

Kaoru: You were nearby after all! You’ve never been one to move about, having others run errands for you.

Kanata: Well it is an old “habit,” so… More importantly, did you have “business” with me?

Kaoru: Oh, no, it’s nothing serious. Souma-kun is doing a big cleanup for the clubroom, so I thought as former members of the marine biology club, we should get together to help him out.

Plus, the reason why the clubroom is so messy in the first place is ‘cause you just left a bunch of water tanks and stuff everywhere. At least try to clean up that much.

And it’s a little late for me to be saying this but—a bird does not foul the nest it is about to leave!

If you leave something that meaningful behind, the people who are left behind are left wondering if it’s some sort of message and end up feeling uneasy.

You know? Like that urn?

Kanata: …………

Kaoru: Fufu. Good for you, Kanata-kun.

It seems like your mother hasn’t actually passed away.

Kanata: …you told kaoru everything, mikejima?

Madara: I mean, it seemed like Souma-san had already explained the details to a certain extent, so I just filled them in on a bit more.

If they were just left hanging, I’m sure they’d just get curious and look into it themselves, you know?

But as for the urn, I only really explained that it was one of the many items related to the case, nothing more.

I diiid try to hint at the truth to a certain degree, but somewhere in the middle of doing so, it started becoming a pain in the ass to explain sooo…I, myself, have yet to draw any conclusions regarding that matter, too.

Kanata: in other words, kaoru made a “deduction,” and arrived at the “truth” on his own.

that’s amazing. as expected of the son of a “scholar”.

Kaoru: Thanks. That’s the best compliment I could get.

But I do think Souma-kun sees through at least that much of the truth.

That kid’s grown much more than we think. He might look like an idiot at first, but he’s actually pretty sharp, weirdly enough.

Although I do think if it’s something his seniors don’t want to talk about, he doesn’t dare ask out of consideration and pure thoughtfulness.

Kanata:
ahh, that does sound like souma.

but yes, you’re right…both then and now, he’s always been looking at me with those “sparkling eyes” of his.

i wanted to look good in front of him and pretend everything related to my embarrassing “past” never “happened”.

which is why “this time,” too, I left the “retrieval” of the “urn” to mikejima…

Kaoru: I’m always saying the same thing, but why don’t you go and do it yourself? It’s your own matter, so don’t go leaving it to others, okay?

Season: Winter

Madara: Mayyybe that was a sort of a test. To make sure you had the power to overcome hardship yourself.

And at the same time, to make sure you had people willing to put their lives on the line to save you.

In the end, Souma and I made a move, and although it was a set-up by the enemy—we overcame it and won. We rescued you from the evil clutches of ABYSS.

I’m sure your mother felt a sense of relief, seeing that, thinking “Ahh, this child will be just fine.”

She probably figured letting you remain as you were would bring you much more happiness than taking you along with her to live the life of a fugitive where your future was uncertain.

Well, that’s just me talking though. Nothing we can do about it. I’m sure not everything went the way your mother would’ve liked either.

Your mother may have started it all, but our parents also got caught up in it.

Kanata: that must be it…considering how things “unraveled” afterwards.

Madara: Mhm. After the uproar, Souma-san and I rose to fame within the religion for rescuing you, who was almost kidnapped.

Thanks to that, I was able to continue as your caretaker despite the countless times I had messed up, and Souma-san was able to take charge of the rituals and the like.

Our parents also gained prestige and increased their influence within the religion. The leftovers of their children’ achievements.

Mm, no, I’m sure that was also a calculated part of their scheme, too.

After looking into it, I also found out the guys who kidnapped you at the time were my parents’ subordinates.

It’s no wonder they were so peculiarly trained and proficient in their movements.

They were genuine professionals trained to fight against human opponents.

During that kidnapping incident too, I bet they saw through our childish strategy and purposely pretended they got done in.

In that way, ABYSS was a fabricated villain made for us to defeat. A role made to be beaten.

And by creating this so-called “enemy” in the form ABYSS, the believers, shaken by the death of God, would come together as one…

Hmph, sounds like a familiar story, doesn’t it?

Even if that kidnapping incident didn’t happen, I bet they’d have the believers unite and come together as one as some sort of endgame for their plot.

Even the enemy of mankind, the devil, is God’s creation. When you think of it that way, it’s a very religious story for no particular reason.

Even if that’s the case, for the enemy of the Shinkai religion to be named ABYSS, which is just “Shinkai” in another language—it’s as if they were exposing their true nature!

It’s waaaay too sloppy. The believers who bought it are still believers.

Well, in any case, at the end of the day, our parents had us allllll in the palm of their hands.

And because various groups had the same motive, it made it possible to bring the hero-playing farce to life.

Kanata: Your mother and father—

Madara: Yep, and Souma-san’s father, too, had a hand in this.

Coincidentally, Souma-san found out about our predicament by overhearing his father’s conversation, and even found out where “The Abode of God” was located, despite it being hidden.

There’s no way he just so happened to come and save us in the best time, under such good circumstances.

I didn’t question it at the time, but in hindsight, I bet Souma-san was also led along by his father.

That kid was given the role of the hero that rescues us and proceeded without knowing that.

Kanata: still, souma could have pretended he didn’t hear anything and feigned “ignorance”.

despite that, he put his life in the face of “danger” in order to come and save us.

we had only met once and weren’t even friends.

that’s because he’s a “good-natured” person.

both now and back then, that child is a goood boy~♪

Madara: Ahh yeah, he did say something along the lines of “It is only natural for me to do this as a person” at the time.

There aren’t a lot of people that can put those words into action though.

He’s reaaally amazing… maybe it was the recklessness of a child or of ignorance, but even so.

From then on and even to this day, I’ve always held him in rather high regard.

The hero who came to save us.

Kanata: you should say that to the “person” himself. souma is very “honest,” so he’ll be delighted for sure.

Madara: No way. It’s frustrating too, in a way. I can’t believe the little baby chick that fainted when I hit him has become an even mightier hero than I—the hero I’ve always longed to be.

Kanata: oh, you. you’re the complete opposite of souma, not “honest” at all. you’ve always been like this, since long before.

Madara: Well after repeatedly experiencing failure and getting beat up by reality, I ended up becoming allllll sulky and twisted.

I can no longer be a kid who chases dreams.

Kanata: is that so. i still have “dreams” sometimes.

dreams of those days.

i wore an eye cover back then, so i couldn’t see very well, and the “dream” is essentially all dark, but—

—i definitely remember someone’s “voice,” their “touch”.

mother probably “held” me in her arms the entire time after i was kidnapped back then.

and having done something “mother-like” after so long, she began to cry.

drip, drop, it trickled down. a warm and salty something.

i do not know the meaning behind those “tears”. only mother knows.

was she happy to be able to hold her child after escaping? or was it from the loneliness of the inevitable goodbye that would soon come after?

i don’t know, but i will always remember it.

that warmth and the saltiness.

Madara: Mhm. I sat on my mind since then and I did look into it, so I do understand the circumstances to a certain degree.

It’s become confidential, but that religious group has since been disbanded.

The preservation of these documents have also become pretty sloppy in its own way, and if there’s no real need to remain faithful to God, the people involved start babbling away. Well, to a certain extent.

Which means the year-long questions have finally been answered.

Kanata: yes. everything was a “scheme” devised by the “adults”.

—first and foremost, god has died.

Honestly, it’s not even clear whether or not she’s alive.

Kanata: she’s alive. probably. i can feel it.

when i’m touched by the “sea” like this, i feel mother.

at the time, i was almost kidnapped.

i was tied up and unable to move, and i also had my “eye cover” on, so i barely understood what was happening.

i was scared so i closed my “eyes,” and during the time in which i had nearly “fainted”—it felt as if someone was “holding” me in their arms the entire time.

maybe that was mother. that warmth i felt.

Madara: Wellll, it’s certainly not impossible… Your mother officially retired from her role as God when she faked her death. I have no idea what her reason was, and I honestly don’t care.

Maybe she grew exhausted from having to reign as a god in the form of a human or something.

Or maybe there was some other nonsensical reason to it that others wouldn’t be able to sympathize with.

But still, it doesn’t have anything to do with us anymore. Your mother selfishly abandoned her believers who worshipped her as a god, her religion, and even her own child, to flee elsewhere.

She’s a failure of a mother.

Scum like that probably don’t even deserve the right to be called “Mother”.

Kanata: it was inevitable i think. after all, mother had served as “god” a lot longer than i had.

there’s nothing we can do if she didn’t have enough “experience” as a human.

though i admit, it is still a bit lonely, even now.

but i am no longer a “child” who wishes for his mother. I’m surrounded by lots of warm people now.

there is no “need” to be lonely anymore—not even a little bit.

besides, i’m sure mother didn’t abandon me because she wanted to. at first, she kidnapped me to try to take me with her.

(And for that reason, too, I shall earnestly devote myself to learn from my failure and make every effort so that the same mistakes will not happen again.)

Umm, let’s see.

【At the end of my dissolute conduct, I committed a grave taboo, and brought disgrace to our family name.】

【I vow that hereafter, similar occurrences shall never happen again, and I will strongly reflect on my actions in order to prevent a second occurrence.】

And there, complete. Delicate brushwork, content of the highest quality, it’s a perfect finish!

Now all that’s left is to deliver this to Father—

(Hm? There’s a visitor? Father is talking to someone?)

(I mustn't interrupt. Let’s wait a little bit. I wouldn’t want to suffer Father’s wrath again.)

…Oh, there’s a cat in the yard.

A cute, cute little calico kitty!

Hey, there’s no fish here! If you want to fish, do it elsewhere.

If you mess with what belongs to humans, you’ll get scolded severely. Bad kitty!

(Mm… It's not like I want to eavesdrop, but, Father, your voice is so loud that I can hear everything from here!)

(…I-I keep hearing my name here and there. How embarrassing. Are you complaining about your son’s incompetence to your guests?)

(Father~! I’m properly reflecting on my actions! I shall never repeat the same mistakes again!)

(So please, won’t you please forgive me already—hm?)

(God? Did Father just say “God”?)

(—The mysterious child I met at the funeral hall that day turned out to be a god, apparently.)

(Now that you mention it, indeed, that child had a certain aura about him.)

(And although our household is not a shrine but of samurai, it seems that our family has been involved in these rituals for generations and generations!)

(I’ve also had the opportunity to observe these rituals, time and time again. The reason I underwent various types of training is also for this very purpose—)

(To ensure that one day, these rituals devoted to the gods go smoothly without fail!)

(Father has yet to explicitly say this, but it seems like that’s what it is.)

(That day, I unknowingly met a great individual, of whom I shall be serving one day.)

(Normally, it is unforgivable to speak to such an individual of such high status.)

(With that being said, it was only right that I was scolded. If it were the old days, even a beheading would have been insufficient for such an unforgivable act.)

(I’m properly reflecting…I swear to never defile God’s eyes ever again!)

(No, that god had some kind of cover over his eyes, so there’s a possibility he hadn’t seen me at all.)

(Though, that does sound rather lonely…)

(The fingertips of God that touched my head that day were gentle, soft and warm.)

(Even when I wasn’t aware of his status as God, I felt a sense of respect for him.)

(Is that what God is supposed to be like?)

(In that case, isn’t it a wonderful thing to serve and worship God?)

……Hm?

(Hmm~? What has Father been talking about since earlier?)

(“Abisu”? What is “abisu”?)

(Father and the guest keep saying that word.)

(It has an extraordinary feel to it… just like a general on the front lines of a big, decisive battle.

(Although, I do wonder what “abisu” is. A word I have yet to learn.)

(But, hehehe, I just so happen to have a dictionary in my hands.)

(If I don’t know the word, I can search it up immediately. And, what’s important is to understand all the incomprehensible things around me.)

(A… A, abisu. Abisu…Oh! Found it.)

(Now, what does it mean?)

(Umm, in English, it has the meaning of “hell”.)

(Or, it can mean a deep—how do you read this again? Umm, I recall seeing this previously in some kind of book and had a hard time finding it in the dictionary.)

(Oh right, abyss! So “Abisu” means abyss!)

(Of the sea, an extremely deep, pitch-black ravine.)

(And, it can also mean the depths of the sea1. Uh-huh. That was informative.)

✁┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈

1. In Japanese, the depths of the sea is called and written as "shinkai," Kanata’s surname. The first character「深」 pronounced "shin" in this case, means deep. The second character「海」pronounced "kai" in this case, means sea. Put them together and you have Kanata's surname, meaning the depths of the sea (or deep sea).

Chapter 3 << | Masterlist | >> Chapter 5

Season: Winter
Scenario writer: Akira
Characters (in order of appearance): Souma, Kaoru

(Present day. Marine Biology Clubroom)

Souma: —and that was as far as I got to witness.

Kaoru: Yeah, I don’t know if it’s that my ability to understand is low, or if your explanation was just that bad, but yeah, I don't get it at all.

In short, just what was it all about? A looong time ago, you met strange kids at someone’s funeral?

Souma: Ahh…no, I forgot to mention their names. I’m pretty sure the children I encountered were Shinkai-dono and Mikejima-dono.

Kaoru: Ahh, right, those two were childhood friends or something.

Kanata-kun used to happily go on about how “Mikejima did this, Mikejima did that,” so there was a time where I used to get a bit jealous.

There’s nothing I can do even if I’m jealous, though. It’s not like I can win against the time they spent together.

Souma: Mhm……There was a possibility I could have also been in a similar position, but we kept missing one another.

Our family isn’t usually the one dealing with matters regarding Shinkai-dono’s household to begin with. If Mikejima-dono is full-time, we, Kanzaki, are part-time.

Kaoru: I don’t really get it. I was right, your explanations are pretty bad, Souma-kun.

Souma: No, you’re just dumb.

Enough of that, it doesn’t matter right now…… What’s important is this urn (temporary name) that hit my head just a moment ago.

Kaoru: Ahh, right. Is that really an urn?

Souma: I’m unsure. Earlier, I gathered up my courage and opened the lid to check the contents.

Surprisingly, it was empty inside. The ashes and remains of the Buddha were not contained there.

Kaoru: Oh, I see. Thank god. Not that I found it gross or anything—

—but I don’t even want to begin to think about how I could’ve spent three years in the same clubroom with the bones of someone I don’t even know.

Though…well, yeah I still don’t get it. So then what’s up with this vase?

Souma: It’s still unknown, but I think it’s connected to Shinkai-dono’s family.

Look here, it’s his family crest—or, I’m unsure if you can call it that, but there’s a symbol engraved that indicates that they are who they are.

Having this engraved makes it disrespectful for those of another family, or rather, humans, to use it.

Kaoru:
You say that as if Kanata-kun isn’t human.

Souma: I don’t know how much you know about this, but Shinkai-dono’s household is different from what you would consider an ordinary household.

Us Kanzakis and Mikejimma-dono are subordinates to that same unusual Shinkai clan.

I would like you to understand that relationship first.

Shinkai-dono is like the lord, and we are like his vassals.

Kaoru: Right. Our place is also quite old-fashioned, so I know such anachronistic relationships still exist today.

Although, ‘cause we’re modern-day kids, we end up thinking it’s absurd. For some people, that kinda stuff is just too much.

And that’s the part where, well, we have to respect at the very least, even if we don’t understand it.

Souma: That’s the correct way of approaching it. You say good things sometimes, Hakaze-dono.

Kaoru: Oh, Souma-kun praised me. Is it gonna rain tomorrow?

Souma: Stop fooling around. ……Anyhow, this is quite a peculiar coincidence.

Kaoru: What is? Can you please not speak so archaically all the time?

Souma: At the time, there was a similar controversy.

A controversy where ashes and remains, what was left of the deceased, should have been stored inside, however—when the lid was opened, it was empty.

It may merely be a coincidence, but it oddly overlaps.

Kaoru: Hmm? Just when I thought it was a locked-room mystery, was it actually a corpse vanishing trick?

Souma: What are you talking about?

Kaoru: I’m in a mystery drama, you see.

Souma: Fufu. You end up drawn to the role you’re playing for work whether you like it or not. When you work as an actor, you end up becoming emotionally attached to your role and it ends up becoming a part of you.

I’ve also had a familiar experience. Just the other day as well—upon returning home, a coarse line from one of the roles I played in a movie just came out of my mouth.

My mother and younger brother exclaimed in fear, “Our oldest has become a delinquent!”

Kaoru: That’s cool and all, but we’ve gone pretty far off topic?

Souma: You’re right, excuse me.

As I was saying earlier, it seems as if Shinkai-dono’s goal at the time was to meet the body of the deceased.

Kaoru: But that same body ended up vanishing? Something like that?

Souma: Yes, so it seems. It appeared when Shinkai-dono and the others opened the coffin and took a peek, they found that no corpse had been laid there to rest.

Naturally, those around made a huge uproar.

And not only did they suspect Shinkai-dono who secretly went to see the body, but even I, who was close by at the time, was suspected as the culprit.

On top of being severely chastised and interrogated, I was also forbidden from roaming outside for a while.

Of course, because of that, I lost contact with Shinkai-dono and the others, whom I didn’t get to interact with much in the first place.

Kaoru: No way, no matter how you look at it, isn’t that way too harsh? I’m sure you guys weren’t the culprits, and even if you were, it would've just been something done by children.

Chastisement? That’s terrible—way too old-fashioned.

Man~ The older the household, the more frightening the fathers. ‘Cause they’re from a time when the patriarchy was still up and strong. I get it, I get it– my place’s the same.

Souma: Fufu. Perhaps we have more in common than we thought, surprisingly.

Had I realized this sooner, we could’ve had quite the things to talk about.

Kaoru: Right? Maybe I could’ve spent more of my time like a regular, ordinary high school student, having fun bad-mouthing parents and teachers.

Souma: I can’t believe you’d speak ill of your parents! I knew it, I can’t get along with you……!

Kaoru: You’re so difficult…

Souma: Anyways, enough of that. I’m simply going to defend my father for a minute. There was a good reason as to why my father was so angry with me.

At the time, the body that disappeared was that of a person revered as a living god by a certain religion.

Kaoru: A religion, huh…… I’ve vaguely heard that Kanata-kun’s family is more or less something like that.

Souma: So you only know of it vaguely. Well, it’s probably not that interesting a story to hear in depth.

Regardless, keep that point in mind, since it saves me the trouble of explaining. Bluntly put, this wasn’t simply a matter of a body disappearing.

A god had disappeared. Our pillar of strength.

So it was only natural that it caused such an uproar.

To make matters worse, an even more unusual incident arose shortly after—
